The license and terms for handup, written to be read. Buying a license or using handup means you agree to them.
handup is made by an individual developer, named at the end of these terms (“we”, “us”). These terms are an agreement between you and us. They cover the handup software (the daemon, command-line tool, desktop app, Android app, web interface and the self-hostable relay), the websites gethandup.dev and docs.gethandup.dev, and any license you buy.
By installing or using handup, or by buying a license, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use handup. Our Privacy Policy explains what data is involved. Questions: contact support.
handup is an approval queue for AI agents. An agent sends a request, you see what it wants to do, and you approve or deny it. handup runs on your own machines; it does not run the action itself.
handup is beta software. It runs on Linux, macOS and Windows, the Android app is installed by sideloading, and there is no native iOS release. Commands and features may change.
handup is a review tool, not a security product, sandbox or guarantee. It is not an AI model and makes no decisions for you. Optional connections such as Tailscale, a relay, ntfy or Firebase Cloud Messaging depend on services we don't control and may be unavailable.
When you buy handup Personal, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use the handup binaries, subject to these terms. In plain terms:
handup is licensed, not sold. You get the compiled program, not the source code. You may keep backups and use handup's documented CLI, API, hooks and integrations to automate your own work.
Your license is a one-time payment with no subscription and no renewal. It is perpetual: you can keep using the versions you receive for as long as you like, as long as you follow these terms.
Every handup update we release is included at no extra cost. That is not a promise that development or support will continue forever, or that handup will keep working with future operating systems, agents or third-party services.
Hosted services are not included. A managed relay is planned; if we offer it, it will be a separate, optional purchase with its own terms, and it will never be switched on or charged automatically.
You can try handup free for 14 days from the first time the daemon starts. After the trial, handup needs a license: activate it once with your license key, which gethandup.dev exchanges for a signed license file stored on your computer. While online, handup checks every few days with Polar that the key is still valid. A valid license keeps working offline forever; only a revoked or disabled key locks handup. The Privacy Policy describes exactly what these checks send.
Purchases are handled by Polar Software, Inc. (“Polar”), our merchant of record and authorized reseller. You buy from Polar; we license the software to you and support it. Polar runs checkout, takes payment, calculates and collects sales tax or VAT, sends receipts and invoices, and delivers your license key through its customer portal.
Polar's Buyer Terms and Privacy Policy govern checkout and payment. These terms govern your use of handup. The price is shown at checkout (currently $30 USD, plus any applicable tax shown before you pay).
If handup isn't right for you, ask for a full refund within 30 days of purchase. No reason needed, though we'd appreciate hearing what didn't work. Contact support with the email you bought with (or your order number), or reply to your Polar order email. Refunds are processed through Polar to your original payment method.
A refund ends the license for that purchase and revokes its license key, so handup locks at its next online license check. Please stop using and remove handup after a refund. Polar may also issue refunds when the law or card rules require it. Nothing in this section limits refund or withdrawal rights you have under the consumer law where you live.
Don't reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble handup, except where the law allows it regardless of this sentence (for example, for interoperability or security research). Sending agent requests that describe risky or destructive actions is fine: that is what handup is for.
handup helps you review agent requests; it does not guarantee that agent actions are safe or that harmful actions will be prevented.
You choose which agents and integrations to connect and how to configure handup's rules. You are responsible for checking what a request says before you approve it, for actions you approve or allow by rule, and for securing your machines, credentials, paired devices and backups.
handup can only gate what an agent actually sends it. It can't guarantee that every agent action is caught, that a request's description is complete or accurate, or that an agent obeys your decision. We are not responsible for losses, outages, data loss or costs caused by your agents or by actions you approve.
Your requests, previews, decisions and settings live on your machines and remain yours. We claim no rights in them and don't use them to train AI models. When you connect handup to other services (Tailscale, a relay, ntfy, Firebase Cloud Messaging, webhooks), you choose where your data goes and those services' terms apply. The Privacy Policy describes exactly what each connection sends.
handup is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don't promise that handup will be error-free or uninterrupted, that notifications will arrive, that it will prevent harm, or that third-party services will be available. Some places don't allow these exclusions; where that's the case, they apply only as far as the law permits.
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, data or business interruption, arising from handup or these terms.
Our total liability for all claims relating to handup is limited to the amount you actually paid for the handup license the claim relates to. If you use handup without paying, that amount is zero.
These limits don't apply to liability that can't be limited by law, such as for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence, and they don't take away rights you have as a consumer that can't be waived.
You can stop using handup at any time. A full refund ends the license for that purchase. If you seriously break these terms (for example, by sharing your key or committing payment fraud), we may end your license; we will tell you first and give you a chance to fix it when that is practical.
When a license ends, stop using handup. Your local data stays on your machines and is yours to keep; we have no way to reach into your computer and delete it. A license does not end just because we stop developing handup.
Please contact support first; most problems can be sorted out that way.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be handled by the state or federal courts located in California, or by a small-claims court where you live. There is no arbitration clause and no class-action waiver. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country or state where you live, and you may bring a claim in your local courts where that law allows.
We may update these terms. The effective date at the top shows the current version. For material changes we will post notice on this site before they take effect. Changes apply going forward and never take away what you already paid for, such as the license and updates described above.
If any part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a term is not a waiver. These terms, together with anything stated at checkout about what your purchase includes, are the whole agreement between you and us about handup; if they conflict, the checkout statement wins.
