What handup does for Claude Code

  • A PermissionRequest hook sends Claude Code's permission prompts to handup instead of waiting at the terminal.
  • The handup MCP server lets Claude ask on its own before risky steps: request_approval, ask_question and notify.
  • Your note on a denial goes back to Claude as the reason, so it can change its plan.
  • Replies you type under a notice reach Claude through its UserPromptSubmit and Stop hooks.

Set it up

  1. Install handup

On glibc Linux or macOS, use the install script below. On Alpine, use the musl APK package from the downloads page instead. On Windows, download the desktop EXE or CLI ZIP instead of running the install script: the desktop app starts the daemon, or run handup serve in its own terminal for the CLI ZIP. The service command below is Linux/macOS only. (handup setup starts handup and connects every agent it finds in one go; Windows has no background service.)

    curl -fsSL https://github.com/gethandup/handup/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
handup service install # Linux/macOS only; on Windows run handup serve
  2. Connect Claude Code

Preview the config changes, then install the hooks and the MCP server. Existing hooks and keys are kept, and a backup is written before every change.

    handup integrate claude --dry-run
    handup integrate claude
  3. Restart Claude Code

Restart Claude and check /mcp. handup integrate claude --uninstall removes everything it added.

What the approval looks like

  • Bash requests show the command and Claude's description.
  • Edit and Write requests show a unified diff of the change; handup never edits the file itself.
  • Approve, deny with feedback, or edit the request's fields; edited fields go back to Claude as the complete tool input.
  • If handup is unreachable or the request expires, Claude falls back to its own prompt. No fallback ever allows.

Limits

  • Hooks only fire when Claude Code actually asks for permission; commands it already allows run without handup.
  • The installed hook waits up to 660 seconds. Raise the timeout for longer waits: if Claude kills the hook, the request stays pending and nothing is approved.
